PORT ANGELES — Clallam County jail trustees and inmates serving their time on the Sheriff’s Chain Gang are scheduled to move into new quarters today.
An $800,000, 4,000-square-foot remodeling of the jail that was finished earlier this month gives them new bunk space in a more open, although monochromatic, wing of the facility.
Its concrete-block walls, floors and ceilings all are white.
The area had been home to work-release inmates before that program was abandoned several years ago. It was remodeled and reopened to add 30 beds to the jail.
On Thursday, a procession of sheriff’s officials and others toured it.
Rather than cut a ceremonial ribbon, Chief Corrections Deputy Ron Sukert unlocked handcuffs and leg irons that had been linked and stretched across a room.
