PORT ANGELES — Clallam County commissioners approved a salary schedule Tuesday 2-1 for elected officials.
The new salary plan provides automatic wage increases and cost-of-living adjustments.
Commissioner Mike Doherty, D-Port Angeles, opposed the pay scheduled, saying automatic salary increases could create problems in years budget shortfalls arise.
“I’m a little concerned about the costs going out,” Doherty said.
County departments had to cut their budgets 6 percent for fiscal 2002 due to falling tax revenues.
And 141 county employees had their work week reduced to 37.5 hours after declining interest rates added to the expected budget shortfall.
