Clallam County commissioners are still trying to come up with a workable tax break program for large landowners.
At their work session Monday, the commissioners indicated that a further examination of all the issues is needed.
The current proposal, recommended by the county Planning Commission, would amend the county open space code to give landowners with more than 3.2 acres of undeveloped property a tax break of as much as 60 percent.
But by doing so, the tax burden would be shifted to all other property owners in a given taxing district, and “I’ve received very little in support of the concept,” said Commissioner Mike Chapman, R-Port Angeles.
“People are opposed to the idea of a tax shift. I’m not supporting this program right now.”
