PORT ANGELES — Ted Simpson wants another six-year term as District 3 Clallam County Public Utility District commissioner.
Simpson, 69, said this week he wants to continue to help usher the district through the ongoing requirements of Initiative 937, which requires electric utilities serving 25,000 or more customers to obtain 15 percent of their electricity from new renewable resources by 2020.
“This transition from our standard hydropower source to new green energy is problematic,” said Simpson, first elected to the PUD board in 1985.
“I’d just kind of like to help get us through the transition without costing a whole bunch of money to the ratepayers,” said Simpson, owner of Angeles Electric in Port Angeles.
PUD commissioners meet at 1:30 p.m. every Monday at the Port Angeles main office at 2431 E. U.S. Highway 101.
They receive $1,800 a month and $104 per meeting.
The district, which sells water, electric, sewer and wholesale broadband services, has about 30,000 customers.
Port Angeles residents receive their power from the city.
Board members hire the district general manager, treasurer and auditor.
They also approve plans, budgets and expenditures, and set rates and charges for services.
Filing week for the election is May 14-18.
