CARLSBORG — The Clallam County Public Utility District is moving supplies to its new warehouse on Hooker Road.
Materials from the PUD’s Carlsborg operations center at Idea Place were being moved this week into the newly remodeled building, which once housed Costco Wholesale, at 100 Hooker Road, said Jeff Beaman, PUD spokesman.
Drury Construction converted the vacant Costco Wholesale building in Carlsborg into a centralized storage facility after the PUD awarded a $1.38 million contract to the company in August.
The facility was completed in January, and Clallam County issued a certificate of occupancy in February.
The 70,000-square-foot warehouse, which covers nearly 2 acres, sits on a 14-acre site. A 5-acre fenced and paved area provides for the storage and loading of materials.
Landscaping and a welded steel fence around the perimeter of the new storage yard are intended to provide the PUD with security for materials while also screening them from public view.
The first phase of development for the site consolidates the PUD’s purchasing, materials handling, warehouse and water department operations in one location.
Future moves
In the future, the PUD plans to relocate its main administration offices — which now are at 2431 E. U.S. Highway 101 in Port Angeles — to the vicinity of the new warehouse.
“We don’t have a specific time to make that move,” Beaman said.
The design team was led by The Driftmier Architects and included BHC Consultants LLC, Armour Unsderfer Engineering, Interface Engineering Inc. and Foresight Inc.
The PUD purchased the old Costco site for $3.8 million.
Money to pay for the site and to convert the building comes from a 20-year, $8.65 million bond for capital projects approved in April 2008.
Customer rates will not be affected by the project, Beaman has said.
Costco closed the old warehouse in August 2006 and opened its 143,000-square-foot location at 955 W. Washington St. in Sequim.
