Clallam County Sheriff Joe Hawe, who last week was activated for duty with the U.S. Coast Guard, has asked county commissioners to pay the difference between his sheriff’s salary and his active duty pay.
Hawe, a reserve special agent for 20 years, was notified a week ago of his call-up for duty because of the war in Iraq and increased homeland security.
All of the approximately 180 Coast Guard special agents in the nation were put on alert status shortly before the war with Iraq was launched.
Hawe’s monthly sheriff’s salary is $5,803.66, and his active duty pay will be $4,506.30 — a difference of $1,297.36 a month.
