PORT ANGELES — Sheriff Joe Hawe updated county commissioners Monday on proposals to fund three officer positions.
Hawe is seeking support for two recreational officers through an interlocal agreement with the state Department of Fish and Wildlife as well as for a grant funding a school resource officer position.
Under the recreational officer proposal, two deputies would provide law enforcement and protection on Olympic Discovery Trail, which to date extends 29 miles in Clallam County.
The deputies would also operate as boating safety officers, patrolling county waterways, Hawe said. Other duties include typical law enforcement tasks and handling dog bite reports.
The Sheriff’s Department is no longer in the animal control business, but it has partially funded Humane Society Animal Shelter housing of unwanted and quarantined animals.
The county’s portion of the recreational deputies agreement would cost $54,465 in the initial year, Hawe said, noting the deputies would be paid a starting salary of $49,122.
