PORT ANGELES — Sheriff Joe Hawe called Tuesday for the elimination of animal control services in Clallam County.
According to Hawe, eliminating the service — and making other cuts — will save $343,000 in department expenses, helping him to balance the agency’s $6.3 million budget.
“We will still be responding to vicious-animal calls,” Hawe said, admitting his decision would be unpopular.
Hawe’s animal control proposal to Clallam County commissioners and County Administrator Dan Engelbertson involves a cut of $227,555 and includes the layoffs of two animal control officers.
One officer serves the West End. The other is contracted through the Clallam County Humane Society.
The sheriff is also proposing cutting jail corrections sergeant and corrections officer positions, shaving another $115,000 from his department’s budget.
