PORT ANGELES — A candidate to become the next Clallam County sheriff isn’t interested in taking the position as a caretaker.
“If they only want a caretaker, they can find someone else,” said Undersheriff Joe Martin on Wednesday afternoon.
They are the Clallam County commissioners who are expected to name a successor to current Sheriff Joe Hawe by the end of September.
Hawe, sheriff for 13 years, resigned with three years left on his term of office to take a position with a state sheriffs and police chiefs organization.
Hawe’s resignation is effective Sept. 30.
Martin, 69, became the leading contender to replace Hawe on Tuesday when another undersheriff said he wasn’t interested in taking a pay cut of nearly $10,000.
