Clallam’s Sheila Miller, Kelly, Barkhuis lead; Fire District 6 vote losing by slim margin

Clallam County Prosecuting Attorney Deb Kelly is leading her challenger, Larry Freedman, in tonight’s first round of vote counting.

Kelly had 9,494 votes, or 52.74 percent, to Freedman’s 8,508 votes, or 47.26 percent.

Kelly, a 57-year-old Port Angeles Republican, is running for her third four-year term as prosecutor. Freedman, 72, is a Sequim attorney running as a Democrat,

In the race for Clallam County director of community development, incumbent John Miller, who is seeking a new four-year term, was losing to Sheila Roark Miller of Carlsborg.

Sheila Miller had 8,613 votes, 53.21 percent, to John Miller’s 7,573 votes, or 46.79 percent. The Millers are not related but work together in the Department of Community Development.

Selinda Barkhuis held a slim lead over incumbent Judy Scott in the race for Clallam County treasurer.

Barkhuis had 8,098 votes, or 50.57 percent, to Scott’s 7,916 votes, or 49.43 percent.

Scott, 59, of Port Angeles is seeking her second four-year term. Barkhuis, 48, also of Port Angeles, is a licensed attorney and a Clallam County senior planner.

The Forks-LaPush area Fire District 6 levy lid lift was losing by three votes — 55 yes votes, or 48.67 percent, to 58 no votes, 51.33 percent.

The levy lid lift would increase the property tax rate to 90 cents per $1,000 of assessed valuation from the current 53 cents, an increase of 37 cents.

Ballots were sent to the 249 voters within the 30-square-mile district on Quillayute Prairie in the all-mail election. The measure requires a simple majority to pass.

More mail-in ballots will be counted this week, beginning Wednesday.
