PORT TOWNSEND – The debate over reciting the Pledge of Allegiance to open government meetings reached the Jefferson County commissioners on Monday.
During the public comment period at Monday’s commissioners meeting, Joe D’Amico, president of Security Services Northwest, asked that the Pledge of Allegiance open commissioners’ meetings at the county courthouse.
It now is not.
D’Amico’s daughter’s second-grade school class recites it, he noted, so why can’t the commissioners?
Then D’Amico suddenly invited the audience to stand and join him in reciting the pledge.
Commissioner David Sullivan tried to stop him, saying he and his colleagues had not discussed and acted on the issue.
But D’Amico started: “I pledge allegiance to the flag . . .” with the audience, right hands over hearts.
