PORT ANGELES — A $515,699 project to install sidewalks, curbs and gutters has begun this week on First Street between Liberty and Alder.
The 10-week project is the second, and last, phase of city improvements to the eastern entrance of Port Angeles, said Teresa Pierce, city spokeswoman, in a prepared statement.
The first phase included improvements on Front Street between Penn and Ennis streets.
Work by Primo Construction will include installation of concrete sidewalks, curbs, gutters, driveways, street trees and street light wiring improvements. Crews also will widen Penn Street between First and Front streets.
Work is beginning on the west and proceeding eastward. Parking lanes will be closed and traffic diverted into adjacent lanes by markers or flaggers.
Through traffic lanes will remain open during early morning and evening commuter times. Business in this area will remain open during construction.
Funding for this phase includes $363,000 from the Washington State Enhancement Grant and $70,000 from the state Department of Transportation Surface Transportation Program.
The city is contributing $90,000 for street lighting improvements.
