Counties slate conservation district elections

The only polling place elections left on the North Olympic Peninsula will be held next week, but only unopposed incumbents are running.

The elections are for three-year terms for single supervisor positions for the Clallam Conservation District and Jefferson County Conservation District.

Joe Murray, the Clallam district chair, is running without opposition for re-election for his sixth term on the five-person board.

Voting schedule

The Clallam election is 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 2, at the Port of Port Angeles building at 338 W. First St. in Port Angeles and the Sequim High School cafeteria, 601 N. Sequim Ave. in Sequim.

John Boulton, on the board since 1955, also is running unopposed for re-election to the five-person board of the Jefferson County Conservation District Board of Supervisors.

Balloting is 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the conservation district office, 205 W. Patison St., Shold Business Park, Port Hadlock.

Voters must show a valid driver’s license, a valid state identification card or any other identification that would allow the voter to register to vote.

The boards consist of three elected positions and two positions appointed by the state Conservation Commission.

Two elected positions and one appointed position on the board must be filled by land owners or farm operators.

Sequim organic farmer Nash Huber’s Clallam Conservation District appointed position also is up for renewal.

The position does not require land ownership or farm operation.

Applications must be received by the conservation commission or will be accepted at the district office by March 31.

Huber said last week he “probably” will seek another term.

“I enjoy the work,” he said.

“It’s pretty straightforward, and it kind of falls in line with the rest of my work on the Peninsula.”

Conservation districts dispense good-stewardship advice to landowners.

Their boards distribute state and federal grants that encourage safe environmental practices.

The boards also pass annual budgets that in 2010 are $2.6 million for the Clallam Conservation District and $490,244 for the Jefferson County Conservation District.

A 65-foot-long historic tug rests in the Port of Port Townsend Boat Haven Marina’s 300-ton marine lift as workers use pressure washers to blast years of barnacles and other marine life off the hull. The tug was built for the U.S. Army at Peterson SB in Tacoma in 1944. Originally designated TP-133, it is currently named Island Champion after going through several owners since the army sold it in 1947. It is now owned by Debbie Wright of Everett, who uses it as a liveaboard.
