PORT TOWNSEND — Kah Tai Lagoon Nature Park is a neighborhood mainstay for Rosemary and Ron Sikes, who have trekked over it most days of the last 31 years.
They want the 40-acre park, part of which the Port of Port Townsend is eyeing for future development, to remain as it is.
That’s why they asked the Port Townsend City Council on Monday night — and plan to ask port commissioners today — to make the park a permanent preserve.
“There is broad public support for this land to remain a park,” said Rosemary Sikes, Admiralty Audubon Society president.
Although the city’s $1 annual lease from the port does not expire until 2012, Sikes said she wants to ensure there’s plenty of discussion before then.
“They’re in the strategic planning stage, so this is a good time to approach them,” Sikes said.
