LAKE CRESCENT – Clallam County and Olympic National Park road crews have opened vehicle access through a landslide that blocked Camp David Jr. Road on Friday.
A handful of residents were blocked behind the 100-yard-long landslide on the northwest shore of Lake Crescent until Sunday.
Olympic National Park used an excavator and a utility truck to remove debris. The county is lending two trucks to the cause.
County, park cooperation
“We managed to get at least a travel way through the whole thing,” said Ross Tyler, Clallam County engineer.
“We will supply two trucks again tomorrow.”
Before clearing the mud, crews first had to remove trees that presented a danger to workers.
Tyler said it could be Wednesday before the entire slide is clear, adding the area could be susceptible to more sliding this winter.
The county and the national park have long disputed the ownership and maintenance of Camp David Jr. Road.
About four years ago, the park and the county agreed to jointly maintain the road.
