PORT ANGELES — More than a ton of derelict gear was pulled from the bottom of Port Angeles Harbor on Tuesday.
The retrieval of crab and shrimp pots and other fishing equipment was part of a state-funded underwater search and cleanup of Clallam County’s major bays.
Funding to pay divers ran out Tuesday, but Clallam County Marine Resources Committee chairman Joe Schmitt said he hopes the state will award more money for the operation.
The project was funded by a $27,500 grant from the Northwest Straits Commission to the Clallam County Marine Resources Committee, which is dedicated to improving fish habitat. The grant was earmarked to clean up derelict gear in bays and harbors from Sequim to Sekiu.
