Rep. Norm Dicks, whose congressional district includes the North Olympic Peninsula, and other House members are completing a trip to Afghanistan and the Middle East over the Thanksgiving recess, sources in Washington, D.C., said Thursday night.
Because of security concerns, such trips are unannounced ahead of time.
Rep. John Murtha, D-Pa., the House’s senior defense appropriator, led a bipartisan congressional delegation, including Dicks, D-Belfair, in meetings with the U.S. and NATO forces in Afghanistan, Gen. Stanley McChrystal, and Ambassador Karl Eikenberry.
The congressional delegation comes a week before President Barack Obama is expected to announce his strategy for Afghanistan and possible troop increases.
