Dove House gets wings from Gateses: $300,000 grant wll help build 4-unit shelter

PORT TOWNSEND — Your 90 days are up. For someone who’s been abused by a partner or family member, those words are horrific.

They mean you must leave the emergency shelter provided by the Domestic Violence/Sexual Assault Program of Jefferson County and find a place of your own.

Even if your abuser is waiting for you there.

The dread-line will vanish with construction of Dove House, a transitional shelter where people can stay up to two years and that almost has met its fundraising goal.

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has boosted the effort with a $300,000 donation the domestic violence program announced on Wednesday.

Still awaited are $745,000 from two state grants Cheryl Bozarth fully expects to receive.

Those funds, the Gates grant, money from other foundations and the $189,000 raised locally since July will total $2.03 million to build the four-unit home with space for 16 adults and children.
