LAPUSH — Firefighters are battling a driftwood fire on Rialto Beach that broke out this afternoon.
“It is in some of the big driftwood logs that are in the jetty there,” located about an eighth of a mile south of the Rialto Beach parking lot, said Barb Maynes, Olympic National Park spokeswoman.
The fire is on the Quileute tribal side of Rialto Beach, she said.
Jessica Hurley of Forks said she and her family arrived at the beach at about 2 p.m. and saw the fire.
“It had already been going pretty well,” she said.
Driving up to the beach, “you could see the flames . . . and the smoke was billowing out.”
Park firefighters were among those responding to the blaze, Maynes said.
A park ranger was directing people not to park in the gravel parking lot.
