KALA POINT — A person who died in the fire of a high-speed single-car crash on Thursday was so badly burned that investigators can’t identify the victim.
“We don’t know if it is even a man or a woman because of the fire,” said Jefferson County Undersheriff Tony Hernandez.
Although the vehicle was almost completely destroyed in the fire, investigators could read the license plates.
The owner was a resident of the Kala Point community, Hernandez said.
“We have attempted to contact them, but haven’t got in touch with anyone yet,” he said Thursday.
He would not release the make and model of the vehicle.
The vehicle traveled down Baycliff Drive at about 4 p.m., crossed the intersection with Kala Point Drive, and crashed into a wooded area where it caught fire, Hernandez said.
“All we really know is the vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed down Baycliff, and there was at least one occupant.”
