BRINNON — A substitute teacher who doubles as a backup bus driver has walked off the job in a pay dispute with Brinnon School District, temporarily leaving some students without school bus transportation.
Brinnon School Board Chairwoman Gloria Allingham, a retired teacher, said she would meet with Scot Kaye today in an attempt to settle the matter.
Kaye, who as substitute taught at the kindergarten through eighth-grade school of 53 students since October, said a bookkeeping mistake has resulted in his being paid about half of what the district owes him for two weeks of work.
“They have no subs because of problems like this,” an upset Kaye said Thursday in Brinnon.
Kaye said he was getting shorted on his paycheck “big time.”
However, in a letter from School Superintendent Bob Garrison, the district contends that Kaye was paid at a rate of $85.95 an hour, not a day.
“We regret the inconvenience of the error,” the May 9 letter from Garrison states.
At the school Thursday, Garrison acknowledged that he believes the problem will be resolved.
“It was my understanding that there would be a compiling of information and arrangements to have all parties sit down [today] and determine what the facts are,” Garrison said, declining to go into details connected with a personnel matter.
