North Olympic Peninsula residents can safely dispose of unused medications through the free Drug Take Back Day program from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.
The Port Angeles Police Department, Clallam County Sheriff’s Office and the Clallam County Health Department will accept unused medications in the main parking lot of the county courthouse at 223 E. Fourth St.
In Port Hadlock, the federal Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) will collect unused medications in the QFC parking lot, 1890 Irondale Road.
Items accepted
Residents can drop off potentially dangerous, expired, unused and unwanted prescription drugs during the free program.
No questions will be asked; individuals will not be asked for identification.
Individuals may bring controlled and non-controlled prescription drugs, as well as over the counter (OTC) medications to the collection sites.
Intravenous solutions, injectibles, syringes or medical waste will not be accepted due to potential hazards posed by blood-borne pathogens.
In Port Hadlock, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office will have a sharps container on site to accept needles.
Prescription take back programs help prevent misuse or diversion of prescription medications and avoid the environmental and health risks that flushing them down toilets can create.
Other times
The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office at 79 Elkins Road has a disposal box for unused prescription medication available year-round in its lobby.
Also year-round, people can drop off unwanted drugs and medications at the Sequim Police Department at 152 W. Cedar St., and at the Clallam County Sheriff’s Office in the county courthouse in Port Angeles during their regular business hours from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, except for holidays.
