Dungeness farmers to speak on benefits of raw milk products

SEQUIM — Raw milk will be the topic of the North Olympic Library System’s third program in its Food for Thought series at the Sequim Library at

6 p.m. Monday, Jan. 6.

Ryan and Sarah McCarthey, owners of Dungeness Valley Creamery in Sequim, will discuss “Why Raw Milk?” at the library at 630 N. Sequim Ave.

This event is free, and pre-registration is not required.

The McCartheys are second-generation farmers and owners of Sequim’s raw milk dairy, Dungeness Valley Creamery.

They will talk about the dairy farm and their Jersey cows, while presenting their view that raw milk is more beneficial than pasteurized and homogenized processed dairy products.

The presentation will include instruction in how to make basic dairy products like butter, yogurt, kefir and more, from raw milk and cream.

Both McCartheys have local roots.

Sarah grew up on the dairy farm, graduated from Sequim High School and Peninsula College and earned a bachelor’s in animal science production management at Washington State University.

Ryan graduated from Chimacum High School and Olympic College, and earned his bachelor’s in applied management degree from Peninsula College.

He served in the Army for 8½ years including a tour in Iraq.

They now are focused on raising their family on the farm, and supplying raw milk and cream to local communities.
