Early balloting brisk in Port Angeles, Jefferson County

Balloting for a four-year tax levy in the Port Angeles School District has started brisk, with more than 13 percent of the votes already returned to the Clallam County Auditor’s Office.

Of 18,395 ballots mailed out last Wednesday, 2,420 had been returned by Monday afternoon, said Auditor Patty Rosand.

That’s a 13.16 percent return rate in fewer than five full days.

Port Angeles school are asking voters in the all-mail election ending Feb. 6 to approve a four-year, $30.1 million maintenance and operations levy.

The proposed levy would account for about 24 percent of the Port Angeles School District’s annual maintenance and operations budget in 2008.

A 60 percent “supermajority” yes vote is required for the measure to pass.

Participation of at least 40 percent of those who voted in the last Port Angeles School District election, or 8,169 people, also is required.

The estimated tax rates per $1,000 of assessed valuation are $2.37 in 2008, $2.27 in 2009, $2.04 in 2010, and $1.89 in 2011, based on property assessment projections over the four-year span.

The rate on the current Port Angeles levy that expires this year is $2.98 per $1,000 of assessed valuation.
