East Jefferson Fire-Rescue extinguishes Port Hadlock carport fire

Jefferson County deputy sheriff, first on scene, contained fire

PORT HADLOCK — East Jefferson Fire-Rescue extinguished a carport fire in Port Hadlock this week, and Jefferson County Sheriff’s Deputy Jason Avery is being praised for his help.

EJFR Assistant Chief Pete Brummel complimented Avery, who arrived on the scene first Monday night, for his quick action in containing the fire with an extinguisher, according to an EJFR press release.

Avery, EJFR and an engine from Naval Magazine Indian Island responded to the fire in a carport in the 40s block of Curtis Street at 8:01 p.m.

The fire was rapidly extinguished using approximately 50 gallons of water.

“While no one should put themselves in harm’s way, it is wise for all homeowners to have an ABC fire extinguisher where it can be easily accessed in case of fires confined to a small area and not growing, such as a wastebasket fire,” Brummel said.

“If you have such a fire, make sure everyone has exited the building, 9-1-1 has been called or is being called, and the room is not filled with smoke. Again, home fire extinguishers are only meant for small fires in their very beginning stages. Anything bigger and you should get out while you can and call 9-1-1.”

EJFR recommends ABC extinguishers because they are suitable for use with fires involving ordinary combustibles such as paper, wood, textiles and plastics, as well as flammable liquids and energized electrical equipment.
