Eclectic trio to perform in Coyle on Friday

COYLE — The Kate Copeland Trio mixes music from many worlds.

Its members are Madeleine Sosin, a member of the Latin duo Correo Aereo; Kiyota Sage, one of the juggling-comedy-stunt group Nanda; and Copeland, a traveling folk singer.

Copeland, who’s been traveling and playing gigs from Brooklyn, N.Y., to Seattle this fall and winter, will bring her new trio to the Laurel B. Johnson Community Center for an all-ages concert Friday night.

Admission is by donation to the 7:30 p.m. performance, which is part of the “Concerts in the Woods” series.

The Kate Copeland Trio is “something entirely different,” said Norm Johnson, who hosts the Coyle concerts twice a month.

“I got very intrigued listening to sound samples of Kate Copeland.

“It’s always fun to discover a new talent. I particularly love how [the trio’s] music depends heavily on vocal harmonies.”

Copeland, who started out performing at the Oregon Country Fair as a small child, went to Ohio’s famed Oberlin College & Conservatory.

Between classes on music theory, she penned folk songs, with influences ranging from Medieval chant to Igor Stravinsky to Joni Mitchell.

Most recently, she’s been working on her debut album, a record that mixes Copeland’s songwriting with her passion for rich orchestration.
