PORT ANGELES — The Elwha River Bridge on U.S. Highway 101 west of Port Angeles will be closed to all traffic for an hour Wednesday morning.
The bridge will be closed between about 8:45 a.m. and 9:45 a.m. Wednesday, the state Department of Transportation announced Tuesday afternoon.
During that time, crews working for Transportation will lower equipment into the Elwha River for drilling activities associated with design work on a new Elwha River Bridge.
Motorists are advised to use state highways 112 and 113 as a detour. Drivers are also advised that the hour time frame is approximate and depends on work progress.
Crews had hoped to accomplish the work Tuesday under a single-lane closure, but the water flow in the river was too high for the work to be safely accomplished, Transportation said.
Today’s approach will require crews to lower a small work platform into the river and to drill from that platform.
