PORT ANGELES — Emergency responders were searching Lake Sutherland this afternoon for the body of a 61-year-old tourist from Wales, said Mike DeRousie, Clallam County Fire District 2 assistant chief.
DeRousie said at about 2:30 p.m. today that the man’s identity could not be released until the family was notified.
The man began yelling for help about 150 yards south of the shoreline at Critter Crossing Road on the U.S. Highway 101 side of the lake west of Port Angeles.
“He turned around and yelled for help,” DeRousie said.
“Some people went out there and tried to help him, and he went under.
“We’ve asked the Coast Guard to do a fly-over to see if they can see anything.”
DeRousie said emergency personnel from the Clallam County Sheriff’s Department, the Lower Elwha Klallam tribe, Fire District No. 2 and State Patrol aided in the search.
