SEQUIM — A display of 91 empty bowls, plus two kinds of hearty soup, have started up a monthlong fundraiser.
The Empty Bowls project, organized by the Museum & Arts Center, aka the MAC at 175 W. Cedar St., began with local artists fashioning bowls out of fabric, clay, glass and other materials.
The artists then donated their work to the event, which is a benefit for the Sequim Food Bank.
On Jan. 7, the museum hosted an opening reception for the Empty Bowls show, and patrons purchased 43 of the vessels, said MAC spokeswoman Renee Mizar.
Proceeds will go to Sequim’s food pantry at 144 W. Alder St.
The sale is still going on, Mizar added, through Jan. 29. The remaining bowls are available, with most priced around $10, though a few of the art pieces go as high as $100.
Art lovers who buy empty bowls can be sure their purchases will help fill the Sequim Food Bank’s shelves. At the same time, the MAC also is accepting donations of packaged or canned goods and household paper products all month.
When MAC Executive Director DJ Bassett and his wife, Magdalena Bassett, threw the party Friday, Magdalena served two of her specialty soups: cream of butternut squash and cream of green peas.
Since many guests asked for the recipes, Mizar said, they have been posted on the MAC website, www.macsequim.org.
