PORT TOWNSEND – Enforcement of a city bicycle helmet law could be pushed another 18 months into the future to give the city more time to establish adult and youth bike safety education programs.
City Manager David Timmons said Tuesday that he may take the law – which has been on hold since it was approved in December 2005 – back to the City Council before an extension period expires July 1.
Timmon said the delay was supported by the city’s public safety and non-motorized advisory committees.
The new extension delaying enforcement of the helmet ordinance would give the city time to have Port Townsend Sgt. Troy Surber and Port Townsend cycling advocate David McCulloch trained as bicycle safety instructors.
