A U.S. Coast Guardsmen who allegedly fabricated a racist note faces court-martial today in Seattle for charges in violation of the Uniform Code of Military Justice.
Some of the charges relate to the incidents that came to light in Port Angeles last spring, when the black petty officer, then assigned to the Coast Guard station on Ediz Hook, reported finding a note containing a racial epithet on his car windshield in front of his home. He also told police he had been the subject of racial slurs at a Port Angeles fast-food restaurant.
As police investigated, the guardsman admitted falsifying the note.
Port Angeles City Councilwoman Karen Rogers and Editor-Publisher John Brewer, both members of the city’s Community Multi-Cultural Task Force, may testify at the guardsman’s sentencing hearing if he is found guilty.
