Peninsula Daily News photojournalist Keith Thorpe set up an isolated video camera about 90 feet east of the Peninsula Plywood stack Monday afternoon in anticipation of the 3:30 p.m. explosion that would topple the 175-foot chimney.
Although the explosion didn’t drop the stack — it would be toppled nearly three hours later using nonexplosive means ( see https://www.peninsuladailynews.com/article/20130409/NEWS/304099991/penply-stack-proves-tough-8212-but-finally-falls-ending-an-era ) — this view provides an interesting up-close-and-personal view of the explosion and the moments leading up to it.
In case anyone’s wondering, no camcorders were harmed in the making of this video (although the battery ran out of life before the 6:13 p.m. falling). And our gratitude goes to Rhine Demolition for its cooperation in allowing Keith to place the camera and tripod.
