Lower Elwha Klallam Chairwoman Frances Charles says some tribal members continue to work at the Port Angeles graving yard site on “exposures of the burials,”‘ screening soil that has been removed from the property.
But about 60 tribal employees have been laid off, she said Wednesday night.
“We knew at the beginning this was a day-by-day (project),” Charles said.
She said she hopes to talk with state officials in the next few days about the future of the site of the former Klallam village Tse-whit-zen.
“On behalf of the tribal council and members of the community,” she thanked people for the support they have shown the tribe.
“It’s not a win-win for anybody,” she said.
