EYE ON THE PENINSULA: Clallam County to discuss Elwha River watershed

Meetings across Clallam and Jefferson counties

A trust land transfer, a weekly COVID-19 update and the continuation of a public hearing regarding an emergency shelter and housing code will be before Peninsula boards and commissions this week.

Clallam County Commissioners

The three Clallam County commissioners will discuss a trust land transfer application filed with the state Department of Natural Resources by the city of Port Angeles regarding 3,082 acres in the Elwha River watershed during their weekly work session Monday.

The commissioners’ work session, at 9 a.m. Monday, will preview items set for action at their formal meeting, which starts at 10 a.m. Tuesday.

• A public hearing regarding debatable budget emergencies as well as resolutions adopting various budget reductions, revisions and supplemental appropriations.

• A resolution awarding $683,364 in lodging tax grants to 15 agencies.

• An agreement with Jefferson County for grant writing assistance for RECOMPETE funding.

• An agreement with Natural Systems Design, Inc., of Seattle, for $161,766 to perform channel migration zone delineation on the lower Elwha River.

• A letter of support for the Port of Port Angeles port infrastructure development program.

• A letter of support for the North Olympic Land Trust’s acquisition of Heifer Farm and Cameron Farm Estates.

• An agreement with Pacific Office Equipment for $66,861 to provide office furniture for the public health offices.

• Annual renewal of the longstanding memorandum of understanding with Washington State University regarding the county extension.

• An agreement with Carousel Industries for $68,744 to provide phone system maintenance and support.

• An agreement with the state Military Department to renew the annual Operation Stonegarden grant.

• A request for proposals/qualifications for consultants to develop the community wildfire protection plan.

• A grant application for $41,822 to obtain Live Scan fingerprint machines for the Sheriff’s Office.

• Discussion regarding a proposed grant application to the state Administrative Office of Courts to fund a Veterans Court.

• A discussion regarding proposed operation of electric vehicle charging stations.

• An agreement with the state Department of Agriculture for a $150,000 reimbursable grant to perform safety upgrades to the dog barn and agility arena at the county fairgrounds.

• Right-of-Way purchases from Clifford and Judy Hewitt and from Joel and Shauna Wilhelm for a fish barrier mitigation project on Bear Creek Road.

• Solicitation for bids to supply hot mix and CSS-1 liquid asphalt for 2024; bids must be received by 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 28.

• A grant application to the U.S. Department of Transportation to develop a countywide road safety plan.

• A request from the Public Works Department to create a new position for a regional trails and active transportation coordinator.

• A resolution to disburse $1.5 million in conservation futures funds for Cameron Farm Estates, Heifer Farm North and, possibly, Maple View Heritage.

• A call for a public hearing on June 4 regarding the proposed extension of Lake Sutherland Management District No. 2.

The Washington State Association of Counties will hear a weekly update on COVID-19 when they meet at noon Monday.

Both Clallam and Jefferson counties will participate.
