Government meetings across North Olympic Peninsula

The boards of local government agencies will meet next week on the North Olympic Peninsula.

Clallam County

The three Clallam County commissioners will consider a resolution appointing 28 members to the recently created Revenue Advisory Committee during their weekly work session Monday.

The commissioners’ work session, at 9 a.m. Monday, will preview items set for action at their formal meeting, which starts at 10 a.m. Tuesday.

• An update on Olympic National Forest from Kelly Lawrence and Susan Beall.

• A call for bids for the Lake Pleasant boat launch piling replacement project due by 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 9.

• An agreement with the U.S. Department of Agriculture for a $125,000 Community Wildfire Defense Grant.

• An agreement with Titan Armor Solutions, Inc. for $17,805 to purchase 60 rifle-rated ballistic armor plates and 30 plate carriers for the Sheriff’s Office.

• Resolutions to adopt various budget reductions, revisions, supplemental appropriations and debatable budget emergencies.

• A presentation on the implications of climate change forest management on streamflow from Oliver Grah.

• A weekly legislative update.

• Several resolutions appointing volunteers to various boards and committees.

• A call for a public hearing at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 26, regarding a proposed comprehensive plan map and proposed zoning map amendments.

• Agreements with the state Department of Commerce, the North Olympic Development Council and Washington State University for RECOMPETE grant services.

• Award of the 2024 crushing bid to Bruch and Bruch Construction, Inc. for $560,378.

• Renewal of a contract for warehouse space for the Sheriff’s Office to store evidence.

• A contract with the state Department of Commerce for $400,000 for a climate planning grant to update the hazard mitigation and comprehensive plans.

The three Jefferson County commissioners will discuss the scope of work for the Healthier Together Task Force when they meet at 9 a.m. Monday.

The commissioners also will hear a monthly update on public health and emergency management from Dr. Allison Berry and Willie Bence; discuss and potentially award a contract for the county newspaper of record; discuss self-haul hours at the solid waste transfer station; discuss the followup to the Federal Emergency Management Agency community assistance visit; and discuss the community rating system.

Items on the consent agenda include six resolutions initiating county road projects; a call for a public hearing at 10:30 a.m. Monday, April 8, regarding the closeout of the community development black grant – coronavirus; a contract with Intertek Professional Services Industries for $53,338 for material testing on the Port Hadlock wastewater treatment plant project; and an agreement with Key City Public Theatre for $13,750 for ADA-accessible technologies.

Short-term rentals

Jefferson County will host a series of public meetings to discuss regulations regarding short-term rental properties.

Meetings are scheduled at 5:30 p.m. at the following locations:

• Tuesday, March 12, at the Cape George Fire Station, 3850 Cape George Road, Port Townsend.

• Wednesday, March 13, at the Tri-Area Community Center, 10 West Valley Road, Chimacum.

• Thursday, March 14, at the Quilcene Community Center, 294952 U.S. Highway 101, Quilcene.

The county is looking for public input to determine if there is a need to change the existing regulations governing short-term rentals and, if needed, what sort of changes might be necessary.

The discussion will center around Airbnb, HIP Camp and similar options for transient or tourist accommodations that may be reducing long-term housing options for members of the workforce.

County staff will begin each meeting with an explanation of the county’s current regulations, potential enforcement options regarding unpermitted rentals and share how other counties are balancing the need for tourist housing against long-term rentals for workforce housing.
