Fall fun packs this weekend on the North Olympic Peninsula with everything from the Bear Creek Chili Cookoff to the Great Strait Sale to crafts fairs, benefits, music and special exhibits and lectures.

PORT ANGELES
Auto thrill show
PORT ANGELES — The World Champion Auto Daredevils will perform at the Clallam County Fairgrounds, 1608 W. 16th St., today.
Gates open at 6 p.m., live rock ‘n’ roll music from Chantilly Lace will begin at 6:30 p.m. and the two-hour show will start at 8 p.m.
Arrival before 7 p.m. is suggested so people can participate in drawings and prize giveaways.
Admission is $15 for adults, $10 for children 11 and younger.
Stunts performed will include the “Slide for Life,” motorcycle firewalls, the “Outlaw T-Bones,” a domino crash and a human battering ram.
The final show also will feature a vertical car drop. Affordable Crane will hoist a Daredevil in a car 150 feet in the air and let it drop.

Derby Dolls booth
PORT ANGELES — Port Scandalous Derby Dolls, the North Olympic Peninsula’s all-female, full-contact roller derby team, will have an informational booth at the Auto Daredevils show at the Clallam County Fairgrounds today.
Gates open at 6 p.m., ’50s rock ‘n’ roll music by Chantilly Lace will begin at 6:30 p.m. and the show will start at 8 p.m.
Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for children 11 and younger.
The Port Scandalous Derby Dolls hold “Fresh Meat” nights for beginners at Olympic Skate Center, 707 S. Chase St., from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Mondays.
Fees are $10 for a first visit, with maximum monthly dues of $30.

Art show tonight
PORT ANGELES — A new art show debuts tonight at Karon’s Frame Center — the first exhibition for Beth Hutmacher, a Port Townsend artist who works in colored pencil and pastels.
The public is invited to an opening reception from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the shop at 655 E. Front St.
“I love her style,” said Karon’s custom framer Kristi Knowles, who called Hutmacher’s images “soft and meditative.”

Hutmacher’s show is part of Port Angeles’ free Second Weekend gallery walk, which features art displays at many other downtown venues including the Waterfront Gallery, the Art Front and Studio Bob on First Street and The Landing Mall and Feiro Marine Life Center at City Pier.
Boot burns breakfast
PORT ANGELES — Park View Villas, corner of West Eighth and South G streets, will host the Port Angeles Fire Department’s “Give Burns the Boot” Pancake Breakfast from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. Sunday.
Proceeds will benefit the Northwest Burn Foundation.
The foundation works to prevent burns and improve the quality of life for burn survivors.
Suggested donation for the breakfast is $5.
Gun and knife show
PORT ANGELES — Falcon Productions will hold a gun and knife show at the Port Angeles Masonic Temple, 622 S. Lincoln St., on Saturday and Sunday.
The show will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday.
Tickets are $6 and $5 for military and law enforcement.
A weekend pass is $9.
Drawings for door prizes will be held on Sunday.

4-H Fun Night
PORT ANGELES — Clallam County 4-H clubs will hold a 4-H Fun Night in the Home Arts building at the Clallam County Fairgrounds, 1608 W. 16th St., from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday.
The event includes a talent show, games, a bake sale and a children’s craft table.

Probate presentation
PORT ANGELES — Beverly Brice, a past president of the Jefferson County Genealogical Society, will present “Probate: The Good, The Bad and The Ugly” at First Presbyterian Church’s Parish Hall, 139 W. Eighth St., from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday.
The free event is sponsored by the Clallam County Genealogical Society.
Brice is the Jefferson group’s librarian and is involved with education programs.

SEQUIM
RC demos slated
SEQUIM — Olympic RC Modelers and Sequim Aeronauts will present radio-controlled flying demonstrations at the Sequim Valley Airport, 468 Dorothy Hunt Lane, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.
Admission is by donation. Proceeds will benefit Clallam County Volunteer Hospice.
Flying demonstrations are scheduled throughout the day and radio-controlled aircraft will be on display.
Aircrafts up to 40 percent of full scale will be flown.
Hot dogs and pop will be available.
Prize raffles featuring items donated by local hobby shops will be held.

Vein screening set
SEQUIM — Northwest Vein and Aesthetic Center will host a free varicose vein screening at 541 Eureka Way from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday.
The varicose vein screening is a noninvasive evaluation of the superficial veins in the legs.
Dr. Askel Nordestgaard will visually inspect leg veins and an ultrasound scan will determine whether or not further evaluation is needed.
The ultrasound will evaluate the veins for leaky valves (reflux) that are the cause of varicose veins.
The screening evaluation takes about 15 minutes.
Northwest Vein and Aesthetic Center specializes in comprehensive, minimally invasive varicose vein and spider vein treatments.
The procedure is office-based, ensures little or no down time, and is covered by most insurance companies.
Nordestgaard is a board-certified general surgeon, vascular surgeon and phlebologist.

Series helps families of mentally ill
SEQUIM — A free 12-week course for relatives of people who have been diagnosed with serious brain disorders begins Saturday.
The course, offered by the National Alliance on Mental Illness-Clallam County group, will be held at Sequim Community Church, 950 N. Fifth Ave., from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on 12 consecutive Saturdays.
It will provide information about major depression, schizophrenia and panic, bipolar and obsessive compulsive disorders.
Also, there will be information about problem-solving, communication, basic information about medications, coping skills, recovery and rehabilitation, and self-care.
The teachers are trained alliance volunteers from Clallam County.
Class size is limited and preregistration is necessary.

SEQUIM — Accordion players are invited to perform at the Sequim Accordion Social on Sunday.

Chili cookoff
BEAVER — The ninth annual Bear Creek Chili Cookoff Potluck will be held at the Hungry Bear Cafe, Mile Post 205860 U.S. Highway 101, on Saturday.
The event features live music, the chili cookoff, a beer garden, raffles, drawings, kids games and free hot dogs and hamburgers.
Set up will start after 8 a.m. with a cooks meetings set for 11:30 a.m.
Chili cooking starts at noon, with judging set for 3 p.m.

Great Strait Sale
JOYCE — The Juan de Fuca Scenic Byway Association is sponsoring the third annual Great Strait Sale, a 61-mile yard sale to be held along state Highway 112 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.
People can participate by having private or neighborhood yard sales or by bringing sale items to community sites at the Joyce Depot Museum parking lot, the Clallam Bay School bus barn or the Village Market in Neah Bay.

FORKS — The Clallam County Master Gardeners will conduct a free plant clinic Saturday.
The clinic will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Forks Outfitters/Ace Hardware at 950 S. Forks Ave.
Samples of plants can be brought for identification and for assistance in insect and disease control.

Quilcene health fair
QUILCENE — A health fair will be held at the Quilcene First Presbyterian Church, 294433 U.S. Highway 101 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.
Speakers, informational booths and activities like blood pressure and glucose checks are scheduled.
The health fair is sponsored by the church.
Nursery tours set
PORT LUDLOW — Chimacum Woods, a rhododendron nursery, will hold free tours of its five-acre woodland rhododendron garden and propagation areas from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.
The nursery is located at 2722 Thorndyke Road in Port Ludlow.
Visitors can wander the grounds or take a guided tour through the wooded rhododendron garden and see big-leaf rhodies more than 25 years old.
The plants are grown from seed on the North Olympic Peninsula.

Navy band plays
NORDLAND — The Navy Band Northwest’s big band, Cascade, will close the outdoor concert season at Fort Flagler State Park’s Battery Bankhead at 3 p.m. Saturday.
Cascade will perform contemporary big band compositions with classic jazz hits from the 1940s.
The group is composed of 18 musicians conducted by Chief Musician Patrick Hawes.
Cascade performs at concerts and festivals and puts on educational clinics at high schools and colleges throughout the Pacific Northwest.
A $5 donation is suggested.
Crafts Fair
PORT TOWNSEND — The Port Townsend Arts Guild will hold its 37th annual Crafts by the Dock fair on Madison Street and the Port Townsend City Hall courtyard from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
The show features 54 artists from the Northwest and several from out of the state.
Fairgoers will find handmade drums ,wood jewelry, rugs, pottery, hunting and kitchen knives, cedar-carvings,boat paintings, hammocks, lamp worked beads, photography, laminated and carved wooden bracelets, toys and children’s clothes.
Musicians are welcome to busk during the fair.
Proceeds from booth fees help fund college scholarships and other cultural events.

DJ’s anniversary
PORT TOWNSEND — A celebration is planned at the Highway 20 Road House, 2152 W. Sims Way, at 9 p.m. today and Saturday.
For the past decade, Immanuel Green, aka DJ Style “E,” has been producing and performing, and representing the Port Townsend and Seattle music scene.
The Style E Productions 10 Year anniversary party will celebrate that fact.
The event will include Seattle acts The People Now and DJ Dig-Du and Port Townsend hip-hop artists Nik Fury and AK47, and there will be a special DJ set featuring four turntables and Sequim DJ O.B.1. vs. DJ Style “E.”

PTHS play tryouts
PORT TOWNSEND — Auditions for the Port Townsend High School fall play, “The Foreigner” by Larry Shue, will be held in the Port Townsend High School Auditorium, 1500 Van Ness St., from 2:45 p.m. to 4 p.m. today.
Auditions are open to all Jefferson County teenagers, including home-schooled and private-school students.
No acting experience is necessary.
The play opens Nov. 5 and runs for three weekends.

Roosevelt reunion
QUILCENE — Port Angeles’ Roosevelt High class of 1945 will celebrate its 65-year reunion at the Timberhouse Restaurant, 295534 U.S. Highway 101 in Quilcene, from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday.
Quilcene was selected as the site of the reunion to make it easier for class members around Puget Sound to attend.
The class graduated with 97 members. About 15 more male classmates left school early after being drafted for World War II.
“Approximately 45 classmates and significant others will attend to reminisce and renew romances,” reunion organizer Betty Abbot said.
