PORT ANGELES — Linda Jacobs is sending her son a box of dust masks since he wakes each morning in the desert beneath a layer of sand.
Christine McBride has compiled a scrapbook on the war in Iraq to show her son when he returns from the Middle East.
And Cathy Wright has decided that even though her cookies will melt into a brick before they reach her son in South Korea, he and his fellow troops will still eat them.
Twelve parents, wives, grandmothers and children shared these and other stories Wednesday night during the first meeting of Families and Friends of Deployed Military Personnel, held at the Port Angeles library.
The support group is open to all families in Clallam and Jefferson counties with members serving overseas.
