PORT ANGELES — Food and fitness will be combined for Port Angeles elementary school families at a special event from 5 p.m. to 7:15 p.m. today.
The inaugural Family Fun & Fitness Friday will be at Roosevelt Elementary School, 106 Monroe Road.
Admission is free.
The evening will begin with a healthy meal donated by Sodexo Food Services, which contracts with the Port Angeles School District for meals.
At 5:35 p.m., Peninsula College nursing students will present a health and fitness trivia game in which winners earn raffle tickets.
From 6 p.m. to 7 p.m., three activities are offered: CrossFit Kids, offered by the YMCA; hapkido, offered by Phoenix Martial Arts; and Nintendo Wii dancing.
Raffle tickets will be drawn from 7 p.m. to 7:15 p.m.
Raffle prizes, which have been donated by several area businesses, include free memberships for fitness classes, bike helmets, a kayaking trip and a birthday party at Olympic Skate Center, as well as gift certificates.
The evening is targeted at elementary school families, said Beth Clifford, family outreach worker with the Readiness to Learn Program.
“If they have other people in the family, they can bring them,” she said, adding that organizers expect about 200 people to attend.
The Readiness to Learn Program primarily works with kindergartners and first-graders in the Hamilton, Jefferson and Franklin schools, Clifford said.
The program also sponsors parent education classes and community events — and hopes to make this event an annual one, she said.
