Family keeps power on, thanks to Peninsula Home Fund

PORT ANGELES — A family that suffered an injury and layoffs — and has the added expense of a loved one with special needs — thanks the supporters of the Peninsula Daily News’ Peninsula Home Fund.

“Everything happened at once, and we needed money to help pay the utility bill,” says Marjorie Maupin.

“To the people who donated to the fund — thank you.

“Thank you for helping us pay our heating bill.”

The family received $122 from the fund, says Kathy Warner of OlyCAP — Olympic Peninsula Community Action Programs — the No. 1 emergency care agency in Jefferson and Clallam counties which screens applicants for the Peninsula Home Fund.

Expenses rose quickly

Marjorie says day-to-day expenses added up quickly after she lost her job and her husband was prevented from working by an injury.

In addition, the family, which includes 4-year-old Alex, is caring for Majorie’s 77-year-old mother, Bobbie McLean, who requires a 24-hour caretaker.

Her brother, Gus McLean, moved from New York to Port Angeles to help care for their mother in July.

“Having my brother here to care for mom has helped,” says Marjorie.

“Having the family together again also helps.”

The Maupins moved to Port Angeles in 2002 to escape the cold New York winters.

Andy, Marjorie’s husband, had been raised in Port Angeles.

Humbled by experience

“This whole thing has been pretty humbling for us, because we have been pretty self-sufficient,” he says.

“The people that we have worked with have been so wonderful and treated us in a way that did not make us more humble — and we thank them for that.”

The Maupins are still looking for permanent employment, but say they are grateful for the support they have received from OlyCAP’s staff and others, including their landlord who has allowed the family to pay rent in installments.

“It has been a tough year — I lost my dad, Andy lost his mom, I lost my best friend to cancer and everything else has happened,” Marjorie says.

“But we have a lot to be grateful for.

“We have our family in the home — and I know everything will work out.”

‘Hand up, not hand-out’

Peninsula Home Fund is seeking contributions for its annual holiday-season fund-raising campaign.

Now in its 15th year, the fund is supported entirely by Jefferson and Clallam residents.

OlyCAP manages the fund for the Peninsula Daily News.

“We view the Home Fund as a ‘hand up’ not a ‘hand-out,’ says OlyCAP’s Executive Director, Dan Wollam.

“Our goal is not only to be their with a safety net — but also to help people find the resources to invest in themselves so that they become so stable that they need no further help.”

* In the past 12 months, the fund has assisted more than 750 households.

* No money is deducted for administration or other overhead.

* All contributions are fully IRS tax-deductible.

* No money is diverted for administration or other overhead. All costs are absorbed by the PDN and OlyCAP.

* All instances of help are designed to get an individual or family through the crisis — and back on the path to self-sufficiency.

* Home Fund case managers work with each individual or family to develop a plan to become financially stable — and avoid a recurrence of the emergency that prompted aid from the fund.

* Donors’ personal information is kept confidential. The PDN does not rent, sell, give or otherwise share your address or other information with anyone, or make any other use of it.

* Individuals, couples, businesses and school groups set a new record for contributions in 2002 — $67,048. All of that money is expected to be spent by Dec. 31.

* Home Fund contributions are often used in conjunction with money from churches, service clubs and other donors, enabling OlyCAP to stretch the value of the contribution.

* To apply for a grant from the fund, phone OlyCAP at 360-452-4726 (Clallam County) or 360-385-2571 (Jefferson County).

* If you have any questions about the fund, contact John Brewer, Peninsula Daily News editor and publisher, at 360-417-3500.

Through the end of December, the PDN will do stories every Wednesday and Sunday on how the fund operates.
