Faulty home entertainment center linked to house fire in Port Angeles

PORT ANGELES — A fire that damaged a home at 22 Rosewood Lane southeast of Port Angeles on Saturday was caused by an electrical component in a TV-entertainment center, Clallam County Fire District No. 2 Assistant Chief Dan Huff said Monday.

Crews with Fire District No. 2 extinguished the blaze within minutes of their arrival, Huff said. The fire was reported inside the single-story home in the Four Seasons Park area at 1:44 p.m.

First responders discovered light smoke around the exterior and heavy black smoke inside

the residence.

The homeowner, Martin Borleau, had been away for about 90 minutes when he returned to find smoke coming from the garage.

The fire had breached the main living room floor, charred a floor joist and caused extensive smoke damage throughout the house, Huff said.

The estimated damage was between $25,000 and $50,000.

The Red Cross was called to assist Borleau.

“At this point, he can’t live in the house,” Huff said. “The smoke damage was way too extensive.

“The Red Cross believes one of his neighbors may be putting him up.”

Investigators were unable to determine the specific component that caused the fire because of extensive damage around the entertainment center, Huff said.

Clallam County Fire District No. 2 had 16 personnel, one command unit, three engines, two tenders and one medical rig on scene.

Crews with the Clallam County Public Utility District also responded.
