PORT TOWNSEND — Engine troubles put the Steilacoom II out of service Thursday at peak summer season, but only for the 9:30 a.m. trip out of Port Townsend and the 10:15 from Keystone on Whidbey Island.
Engineers worked on the 50-car ferry overnight Thursday to repair an intake manifold gasket, which was found while the ferry was down for repairs Thursday morning.
“We had an exhaust leak on one of main engines of the Steilacoom,” said ferries spokeswoman Susan Harris.
The work required that the ferry’s exhaust bellows cooled down so a part could be replaced with an available spare part.
While that job was under way, Harris said, a leaking intake manifold gasket was found and would be replaced overnight.
Ferry service was expected to resume with the 6:30 a.m. run out of Port Townsend, Harris said.
