Fire causes minor damage to Lake Crescent Lodge roof

OLYMPIC NATIONAL PARK — A fire apparently sparked by the fireplace damaged the roof of 89-year-old Lake Crescent Lodge on Saturday night, causing the evacuation of scores of guests and diners.

According to Olympic National Park spokeswoman Barb Maynes, a 9-1-1 call was made at 8:34 p.m. reporting a fire on the lodge’s roof.

The flames, which were reportedly 6 inches high, were quickly doused by lodge employees and a park district ranger who arrived shortly after the 9-1-1 call was made.

Maynes said the employees and ranger used a fire hose station near the lodge.

As they were extinguishing the roof flames, the employees noticed flames coming from the base of the chimney.

They, too, were quickly extinguished using the hose.

Acting lodge manager Eric Toles, of Forever Resorts, said the lodge had 90 to 100 people inside, including a full dining room of about 60 people, when the fire was reported.

The lodge was evacuated and no injuries were reported, Maynes said.
