Fire in Sequim area home under investigation

SEQUIM — A Sequim couple is homeless after a fire destroyed their home on Monday.

Clallam County Fire District 3 referred homeowners Brent and Lacey Lovell to Red Cross representatives after a blaze destroyed the garage of their two-bedroom home and caused extensive smoke and heat damage to the roof and interior of the home at 152 Fitzgerald Road, north of Sequim.

No one was hurt when a fire broke out shortly before 12:17 p.m. when it was reported.

The Lovells were not at home at the time the fire ignited.

About 20 Clallam County Fire District 3 firefighters helped beat down the fast-moving blaze, said District 3 Assistant Chief Tony Hudson.

The cause of the blaze was under investigation Monday afternoon, Hudson said.

“We salvaged antique guns in a locker, some paperwork and some pictures,” from inside the home, Hudson said.

“Their clothes and furniture is destroyed.”

Two water tanker trucks were brought in because the neighborhood is not served by city fire hydrants.

Michelle Kelley, executive director of Olympic Peninsula Chapter of the American Red Cross, said a disaster action team was dispatched to the scene to help the couple meet basic needs.

“Right around the holidays, it’s just a terrible thing,” Kelley said.

The team will set the couple up with a credit card so that they can buy food, clothing, medicine and a place to stay overnight.

The team also will provide emotional support, Kelley added.
