People throughout the North Olympic Peninsula came to cemeteries on Memorial Day, carrying flowers and memories.
Alone, in pairs and in families, they stood in silence or gentle conversation above the graves of service members who made the final sacrifice for their ideals and country.
“We shall remember them,” said Dale Butler, chaplain of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4760 in Sequim.
“They are known as the stars are known to the night,” he said, reading “For the Fallen,” a poem by Laurence Binyon, at Sequim View Cemetery during a short ceremony.
Similar ceremonies took place across Clallam and Jefferson counties Monday as young and old, military and civilian, gathered to remember the nation’s fallen.
