FORKS — A Sunday morning crash in which a 20-year-old woman was hit by a car on a Forks street was apparently an accident, Clallam County Undersheriff Ron Peregrin said Tuesday.
“Right now, there is no indication that it was intentional,” Peregrin said.
“We’re basing that on the statements we’ve received, which aren’t always necessarily true.”
The Sheriff’s Office on Tuesday continued its vehicular homicide investigation into the incident, which occurred on East Division Street in unincorporated Clallam County just outside the Forks city limit.
Mary Elizabeth Cram, a Forks native who had recently moved to Port Angeles, died of injuries sustained in the collision as she was being flown in a medical helicopter from Forks to Port Angeles.
Held in jail
Travis J. Germeaux, 29, of Forks was being held on $50,000 bail at the Clallam County jail in Port Angeles on investigation of vehicular homicide.
Cram’s boyfriend, Matt Germeaux, 24, also of Forks, was a passenger in the Nissan Maxima that struck Cram.
Investigators allege that Travis Germeaux was speeding and intoxicated when the wreck occurred on the foggy, wet road at about 2:30 in the morning.
The two men placed the injured Cram in the Nissan’s back seat and took her to Forks Community Hospital, then left the hospital, according to court documents.
Results from a blood test on the driver are pending.
More investigation
“Our investigation is far from complete,” Peregrin said.
“We’ve done all of our measurements, we’ve collected all of our evidence and we’ve taken statements.
“Until we crunch all of the data and our special traffic investigator puts it all into place, we won’t be able to say that [the crash was not intentional] for certain.”
“But the initial blush is that the collision was not intentional.”
Travis Germeaux will be arraigned in Clallam County Superior Court on Friday at 9 a.m.
