Forks: Economic roundtable provides governor an overview of West End

FORKS — The triumphs, hardships and future of rural West End communities were discussed by local business and civic leaders, tribal officials and Gov. Gary Locke during an economic roundtable here Thursday.

The governor visited Forks several years ago and said he was impressed with the economic improvements since his last visit.

“I see a lot of wonderful things happening in the community,” Locke said. “The partnerships you are forming and the focus on education is very promising, keep up the good work.”

The roundtable panel consisted of about 30 community leaders including Forks and Clallam County Economic Development officials, Clallam County commissioners, forest and timber industry representatives and tribal leaders.

About 30 other people listened to the discussion which lasted more than an hour.

“Let me tell you a little bit about Forks — we have seen highs and lows,” Mayor Nedra Reed said. “Forks is a community with a big heart and a lot of courage.”
