FORKS — A projected $800,000 budget shortfall due in part to continued declining student enrollment means layoffs for the Quillayute Valley School District next year.
Superintendent Frank Walter confirmed Wednesday that cuts will be necessary to balance the district’s fiscal 2002-03 budget.
“It is unfortunate that we have to downsize, but right now we have more teachers than students need,” Walter said. “But the cuts will be from every staffing area.”
Quillayute Valley is the second district to announce pending staff cuts.
Last month, Port Angeles School District officials proposed cutting 12.1 teaching, 4.5 janitorial, 3.5 secretarial, one central services classified, one school administrative and four para-eductor positions to offset a projected $1.7 million shortfall next year.
Quillayute Valley officials have yet to decide how many positions will be eliminated.
