YAKIMA — Four consecutive state volleyball appearances and Forks High School is still without a top-eight finish.
The Spartans went 1-2 at the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association Class 2A Championship Tournament, earning the only match win of three North Olympic Peninsula teams at state.
That was hardly a consolation, especially for seven seniors who saw a familiar ending to another otherwise successful season.
“Every year we’ve been here we went home because we could have beat (an opponent) but we didn’t,” senior Forks setter Selina Fletcher said following the Spartans’ final loss, a 3-0 defeat to Meridian in the semifinal round of consolation play Saturday morning.
“It happened again this year,” Fletcher said.
Meridian topped Forks 25-19, 25-19 and 25-7 to advance to the fifth/eight-place match, proving why it was one of the favored teams before a first-round loss to Chelan.
