SEATTLE — Joe Hawe, former Clallam County sheriff, is the new U.S. marshal for Western Washington.

Hawe, 58, was appointed to the job by President Bush on March 17 and sworn in two days later — then was sworn in again in local ceremonial proceedings last Friday.

Hawe, who served as Sequim police chief from 1984 through 1990, was elected Clallam sheriff four times before leaving in 2003 to join the Washington Association of Sheriffs and Police Chiefs, a law enforcement support and lobbying organization in Olympia, as manager of tactical operations support services.

It was a controversial departure.

Hawe resigned less than a year after he was re-elected to his fourth four-year term.

County commissioners appointed former Undersheriff Joe Martin to the vacancy.

Hawe hired as a deputy the man who defeated Martin in the 2006 election and became the current sheriff, Bill Benedict.
