SAPPHO — Four people were hurt Saturday night when a pickup truck collided with a 21-foot motorhome on U.S. Highway 101 just east of Sappho.
State Patrol troopers said the drivers of two pickups where attempting to pass the motorhome at the same time when the chain-reaction wreck occurred at Milepost 205 near Bear Creek Road.
The 8:55 p.m. wreck blocked the westbound lane of Highway 101 for more than 7 hours.
Stephen A. Ungerecht, 18, of Bothell lost control of a 1995 Toyota Tacoma when it struck a 2001 Ford F350 with a flatbed trailer driven by Charles W. Bos Jr., 33, of Forks, as they attempted to pass the motorhome in the westbound lane, the State Patrol reported.
Troopers said Ungerecht’s pickup truck rotated from the force of the impact and struck the 1973 Toyota motorhome driven by Ted R. Davis, 56, of California.
Ungerecht’s pickup rolled over and the motorhome struck two trees, according to the State Patrol collision memo.
None of the injuries was life-threatening, authorities said.
All three vehicles were traveling eastbound when the wreck occurred.
The state Department of Transportation reopened the westbound lane at
4:36 a.m., spokeswoman Kelly Stowe said.
Ungerecht and Davis were taken to Forks Community Hospital with face and arm injuries. Bos was uninjured.
Two of the three passengers in the mobile home — Melanie L. Davis, 48, of California, and Anna Engelberger, 17, of Germany — were hurt.
Davis was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center with ankle injuries. She was the only person involved in the wreck who was not wearing a seat belt, troopers reported.
A nursing supervisor at the Seattle hospital said Davis was not on the patient list Sunday afternoon.
Engelberger was taken to Forks Community Hospital with arm injuries.
The State Patrol said the cause of the wreck is still under investigation and charges are pending.
Drugs or alcohol were not involved.
